CAMPINAS, Brazil – On July 10, Aviagen® Group signed an agreement and purchased the controlling ownership in Avicola Colombiana (Avicol), a Ross® distributor in Colombia. Under the agreement, Aviagen Group will now have managing control.
Before the agreement, Avicol produced both broiler breeder and layer chickens for the local market. Now Hy-Line, a sister company of Aviagen, will assume the layer part of the business, while Aviagen will be responsible solely for the broiler breeders.
Expanding a global reach
The Aviagen brand of Ross breeders has enjoyed high popularity in Colombia for many years, and now Aviagen can support its Colombian customers even more efficiently through local parent stock production. In fact, Aviagen will be the first poultry breeding operation with local production in the country. In addition to a dedicated sales and support headquarters in Ibague, Tolima, Colombia, the new operation consists of grandparent (GP) farms and parent stock (PS) hatchery, and employs a staff of close to 400.
Avicol launched its business in 1959 and was the first Ross distributor in Latin America starting in 1962. Thus, Avicol has built up in the country a strong base of loyal, successful customers.
Colombia – a region with rising demand
Broiler meat production in Colombia has continuously increased through the years and reached 1.62 million metric tons in 2018. According to FENAVI (Colombian National Poultry Association), the demand will continue to rise, reaching 33.8 kilograms per capita this year.
The new business will help farmers keep up with this growing need, while better serving customers in Colombia and other countries in South America. The Ross 308 AP is popular among poultry growers in Colombia, benefiting their businesses with strong and balanced performance at both the breeder and broiler levels. Colombian growers benefit from the bird’s considerable feed efficiency, environmental resistance, healthy growth rate and high meat yield.
Continuity in service excellence
Ross customers in Colombia will be backed by a global poultry breeding company with its team of experts around the world, and it will also continue to be supported by the existing sales and support team that customers have come to rely on. Gerardo Vesga will also remain as General Manager of the new company, reporting directly to Ivan Lauandos, President of Aviagen Latin America.
Vesga offered his insight on the new company. “My team and I share with Aviagen a vision of continuous improvement for the benefit of our birds, as well as Colombian poultry producers and consumers. I look forward to further strengthening our great relationship with Ross customers in Colombia and helping them get the highest genetic potential with their flocks.”
Rapid Latin American development
In April, Aviagen Peru was created as a result of a strategic agreement between Aviagen and Rocio Group. Aviagen Peru was the company’s first direct presence in Latin America outside of Brazil, where it began operating in 2007. Aviagen now has three strong operations for supporting domestic markets in Colombia, Peru and Brazil, and will be able to use both operations as future bases for exporting high-quality broiler breeders to customers throughout the region.
“With this agreement following closely behind Aviagen Peru, we are quickly expanding our reach in a dynamic and strategic region,” explained Ivan Lauandos, president of Aviagen Latin America. “For the past decade, the Latin American broiler breeder industry as seen rapid growth. This expansion will help us supply producers with high-quality breeding stock to feed their communities with a healthy and sustainable source of protein. As in Peru, customers in Colombia will be supported by valued-added service to help them achieve the highest performance and profitability.”
