Poultry breeder recognized for export excellence, social and environmental responsibility
CAMPINAS, Brazil – On Dec. 12, Aviagen®, the world’s leading broiler breeding company, was presented with the Exporta São Paulo award for export performance from the Federation of Trade Associations of the State of São Paulo (FACESP). Aviagen received the award during a ceremony at the São Paulo State Commercial Association in São Paulo.
Rewarding export performance, environmental and social responsibility
The Exporta São Paulo award evaluates the export performance of companies in 20 municipalities throughout the State of São Paulo that make up the administrative regions of FACESP. It recognizes micro-, small- and medium-sized companies whose export achievements have been evaluated by the Foreign Trade Secretariat of the Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (MDIC). In addition to economic criteria, companies are assessed for their environmental and social responsibility.
Since 2004, Brazil has held the position of the world leader in poultry exports, with 4.3 million tons shipped to more than 150 countries in 2015 alone. Created in 2005, the Exporta São Paulo Award is designed to further stimulate the region’s export success by encouraging producers with growing export sales.
A growing export success story
Exports represent a significant amount of the total net revenue from Aviagen Latin America. Aviagen’s Latin American headquarters are located in Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil, and from its facilities in São Paulo, each year the company exports a considerable number of grandparent stock (GPS) and parent stock (PS) chicks to about 20 countries on four continents around the globe.
“Aviagen Latin America is proud to accept the ‘Exporta São Paulo’ an award that recognizes the ethical, responsible and quality work that Aviagen Latin America has accomplished over the years,” said Locateli. “Our export business started about 10 years ago small with shipments to only a few countries, but through close cooperation with the Brazilian Agriculture Ministry (MAPA) and Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA), has continually opened new strategic markets, and we continue to grow our export business.”
Assuring safe, secure global poultry commerce
Aviagen’s worldwide export success can be attributed to its absolute focus on poultry health, welfare and biosecurity, which represents the cornerstone of its breeding program. Due to rigorous biosecurity practices, in 2010 Aviagen in the UK became the first primary poultry breeding company to be certified as an Avian Influenza (AI)-clean “compartment,” and earlier this year was the first primary breeder in the US to achieve the same compartmentalization status. Compartment status is currently in progress for Brazil, and further information will be released as it becomes available.
“AI has become the biggest threat to trade in regions throughout the globe, and compartmentalization helps eliminate this threat,” added Locateli. “With compartment certification, Aviagen can offer poultry growers worldwide an uninterrupted supply of quality breeding stock, enabling them to sustain the earth’s growing populations with reliable, healthful and affordable protein.”
